Martin in Germany

Twenty-one years old, majored in German and PoliSci at CAL, in Germany studying and interning. No News is Good News

Slowly working

Ever so slowly the language is comming back to me.  First arriving it was still hard to string sentences together without awkward pauses.  People are starting to stare at me less, which makes me think I’m blending in well.  And less people are trying to speak English to me, I suppose that means my American accent is slowly fading away again.  I lost it once and am determined to lose it again.  This month I’ve made a personal pact to hang out with Americans less.  I really do like them all, however it has not been inductive to me learning more German.  I’ve noticed that in this first week.  I go home, practice German, and am slowly improving — so I’ve led myself into believing at least.  Every morning on the way to school objects, people, and places are constantly named and little stories are made up about them in my head.  I hope it helps me to start thinking German.

Loniness?  Homesickness?  Culture shock?  Has not hit me yet.  It will.  This blog will keep you updated once it has.

Hopefully I’ll post pictures soon.  I’m going to Remscheid, and will be going to the Uni Wuppertal.  I’ll also be living with a host family!

So it has been a while since I’ve posted.  All is going well!  I went and saw a show by Christian (and his band Skouch).  His younger brother Hendrik also played (in his band Zeit für Plan B).  That was last weekend, and it was a really good show in a run down old train station.  Pretty cool.  Best of all, Wuppertalers love Zywiecz, it’s a Polish Beer that is SUPER good.  Other than that, went to Düsseldorf yesterday, it was okay.  Not that much fun if you’re not shopping, but the night life was good, but then again that doesnt get going until nighttime.  I’m learning a lot of German, basically honings skills and trying to repair poorly learned habits.  Last week we went wine tasting, this week we went on the Rhein for a boat trip.  We also visited the castle Marksburg.  All in all though, still no set routine to jump into.

Othernews: I’ll be living with a host family starting in October until at least January.  I’ll be living in Remscheid, a smaller place outside of Wuppertal, and I will be going to University Wuppertal.  Things are looking up.

Now if I just had my boots.. (really should have brought those with me).

Wine-tasting

Went to the best winery in Germany yesterday.  Of course I forgot my camera.  Dumb.  I have the link here.  The picture on the homepage is kind of creepy.  We had really expensive wines paid by the Sprachschule (Language School).  It is sunny, and not raining.  Going to see Christan’s band play tonight in Wuppertal.  Still have not taken more than 2 pictures.  I’ll work on remembering to bring my camera with me.

At the Hahn's

I’m at the Hahn’s.  It is great to see them.  Had a shock yesterday about Krysia’s train, and we were very relieved to hear she was okay.  It is raining in Wuppertal.  I have still yet to take one picture in Germany.

New Cellphone Number!

It is free for me to recive calls!  Feel free to call if you want.

First day of class was hilarious.  My instructor is great.  Don’t have much time (again) to post.  I don’t get internet a whole lot, but hopefully I can post some more information later.  Off to meet Nils!

Arrived

Well, I arrived after cancelled Lufthansa flights and after staying in D.C. for a month.  I’m living with an lady in Köln.  Everything is great, more updates after more orientations!
